Pitch Lake
Lake World's largest natural asphalt lake and geological curiosity
Pitch Lake at La Brea is the world’s largest natural asphalt deposit; guided walks and local guides explain its geology, industrial history and occasional bubbling pools of pitch.
Pitch Lake, at La Brea in southwestern Trinidad, is the world’s largest natural deposit of asphalt and a notable geological attraction. The area forms a broad, viscous surface of natural bitumen with observable seeps and occasional bubbling.
The lake presents an unusual landscape of tar, minor pools and occasional vegetation on its firmer margins; it has long been used as a commercial source of asphalt. Guided visits are commonly offered that explain the lake’s geology and allow controlled access to suitable areas.
Local use of the deposit for road-building and industrial purposes has occurred historically, while scientific interest focuses on the lake’s hydrocarbon seeps and microbial communities. The site sits near the coastal plain in the southwestern part of Trinidad’s main island.
