Klcyr is reached primarily by road; there are no commercial flights into the town. The most common international arrival points are Tirana (TIA) and, seasonally, Ioannina (IOA) in Greece.
Tirana N7era Tereza (TIA): From Tirana Airport you can take the Rinas Express shuttle to Tirana city centre (around 25-30 minutes, fare ~300 ALL / ~2.5 EUR) then change to an intercity bus toward Tepelen/Permet. The drive TiranaKlcyr is roughly 2.5-3 hours by car depending on traffic; private transfers or taxis are also possible.
Ioannina National Airport (IOA): Ioannina (in Greece) is the closest international airport by road for southern Albania when flights are available; the drive to Klcyr is about 1.5-2 hours. From Ioannina you can hire a taxi or rent a car; scheduled cross-border shuttle services are infrequent, so pre-booked transfers are common.
Train: There is no direct national rail service to Klcyr; the nearest useful rail hubs are Fier or Tepelen (regional lines) - travellers typically use rail only as far as major towns then switch to road transport.
Bus: Intercity buses and minibuses (furgons) are the usual way to reach Klcyr from Tirana, Gjirokastr or Ioannina. Expect Tirana Tepelen journeys of about 34 hours then a short local minibus or taxi to Klcyr; booking is usually done at the main Tirana bus terminal or on arrival at the airport shuttle stop.
How to Get Around Këlcyrë#
Klcyr is best reached by road. Use Tirana or Ioannina as arrival hubs then transfer by intercity bus, local minibus or a private car; once there, short distances are easily walked or covered by local taxis.
- Intercity bus / furgon (€3-10 (approx.)) - Regional and private minibuses connect Klcyr with Tepelen, Gjirokastr and Tirana. These leave from main bus stations; services can be irregular so arrive early and ask locally for the next departure. Expect multi-leg journeys and to change vehicles at larger towns.
- Taxi / private transfer - Taxis and private transfers offer door-to-door convenience from Tirana or Ioannina; useful if you have heavy luggage or arrive late. Negotiate a fixed fare up front for intercity runs; drivers familiar with the route will use SH4 and mountain roads.
- Car rental - Renting a car at Tirana or Ioannina gives the most flexibility for exploring the surrounding region and accessing Klcyr’s gorges and viewpoints. Roads are a mix of national and mountain routes; allow extra time in bad weather.
- Local taxi / dolmush - Short local hops within the area are handled by shared taxis or dolmush-style minibuses from nearby towns. Schedules are informal-ask at the local bus station or your hotel for the best connections.
- Walking - Klcyr is a small town where many sights and businesses are within a short walk of the main road; comfortable shoes are useful on uneven pavements and when exploring viewpoints.
