How to Get to Penal
Penal is reached by road from Port of Spain / Piarco Airport (POS) or via San Fernando. There is no rail service-public buses, PTSC services and private maxi-taxis (shared minibuses) are the common ways to travel.
Piarco International Airport (POS): Piarco (near Port of Spain) is the main international airport for Trinidad. From Piarco to Penal the drive typically takes about 45-75 minutes depending on traffic and route; taxis and private transfers are the usual choices for the airport-to-Penal leg.
(Other airports): For domestic connections or charter flights, ANR Robinson (formerly Crown Point) is on Tobago; travelers heading to Penal normally route via Trinidad and continue by road.
Train: There is no passenger rail service in Trinidad.
Bus / Maxi taxi: Public buses and private maxi-taxis operate across Trinidad. Maxi-taxis and private minibuses run between San Fernando, Chaguanas and Penal; PTSC buses serve some routes as well. Journey times vary with traffic but routes from San Fernando to Penal are typically under an hour.
