How to Get to Pastos
Aibonito and its barrios are reached mainly via Puerto Rico's airports at San Juan (SJU) or Ponce (PSE) followed by a drive inland. There is no island-wide passenger rail; most visitors rent a car or take a taxi/shuttle to reach the mountain town.
Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU): The main gateway for Puerto Rico, located in Carolina near San Juan. Taxis to Aibonito (via Route 52 and local roads) take about 1-1.25 hours; expect roughly $45-$65 by taxi. Rental cars are widely available at the terminal; driving to Aibonito takes about 1-1.25 hours depending on traffic.
Mercedita Airport (PSE): The airport serving Ponce on the south coast is the closest commercial airport for some southern towns. From PSE to Aibonito is around 1.25-1.5 hours by car; taxi costs will typically be higher than from SJU because of distance (expect $70+). Car hire at PSE is an easy option for reaching mountain towns.
Train: Puerto Rico’s Tren Urbano serves the San Juan metro area only (Bayamón-Sagrado Corazón). There is no island-wide passenger rail to Aibonito; nearest Tren Urbano stations are in the San Juan metro and are useful only if you plan to combine a train ride in the metro before picking up a rental car or bus.
Bus: Local and intercity bus options are limited for mountainous towns. Metropolitan buses (AMA) and shared minibuses (‘públicos’) operate around San Juan with fares typically under $1; intercity shuttle vans and private shuttle services connect San Juan or Ponce to nearby municipalities - travel times to Aibonito from San Juan run about 1-1.5 hours and prices vary (private shuttle or taxi fares as above).
