Pai Canyon is an eroded ridge-and-gully formation near the town of Pai in Mae Hong Son province in northern Thailand. It is noted for narrow, red-earth ridgelines and exposed cliff edges that create dramatic, walkable viewpoints.
A compact network of trails links several lookout points along the canyon ridges; many visitors walk short sections of the ridgelines to photograph the cliffs and the surrounding Pai valley. Trails are informal and can be narrow in places, which is why many visitors come specifically at sunrise or sunset for the light and views.
The canyon formed through long-term erosion of local soils and sedimentary deposits rather than by large-scale construction. Its appearance and pathways have been shaped by seasonal rains and ongoing erosion.
Pai Canyon sits a short drive from Pai town in Mae Hong Son province, set on the higher ground overlooking the Pai valley. The site is accessed by local roads from the town center.
- Best time to visit: Sunrise and sunset are the most popular times for visitors due to the light on the red soil and broad valley views, and these periods are busiest.
- Safety: Trails are narrow and include exposed drop-offs; caution and sensible footwear are advised when walking the ridges, particularly after rain when paths can be slippery.

Exploring Pai Canyon
Only recently made accessible to the public, Pai Canyon sits right beside the main road to Chiang Mai, so it can easily be visited on the way into or out of town. A small parking area and a few souvenir stalls cluster around the entrance sign, and a steep concrete stairway climbs a couple of hundred metres to a small plateau. Leading out from here are several ridges, the tops of which have been worn smooth by footsteps until they stand out from the landscape.
It is not exactly the Grand Canyon - the drop is only about 50 metres deep - but it still creates a striking perspective. You can walk out along the ridges, though it is all rather precarious and there are no safety ropes should you make a false step, so take care. Even if you do not venture along them, it is a fine spot for a few photos of a strange landscape, particularly at sunset.

How to Get to Pai Canyon
Pai Canyon is a short motorbike or tuk-tuk ride from Pai town center in Mae Hong Son Province (about 3-4 km). Many travelers rent scooters in Pai or hire local drivers; the canyon is accessible by the Pai-Huay Nam Dang Road and local signs from town.
