Ovalle is best reached by road from the nearest airports in La Serena or by long-distance bus from Santiago. The city has a modest regional bus terminal; buses are the main practical intercity option.
La Serena-La Florida Airport (LSC): Regular domestic flights connect La Serena with Santiago; from La Serena airport you can reach Ovalle by intercity bus or taxi. Buses from La Serena bus terminal to Ovalle take about 1-1.5 hours; expect CLP 5,000-10,000 (one way) and taxis/private transfers ~CLP 40,000-60,000 and about 1-1.5 hours.
Arturo Merino Benítez / Santiago (SCL): If you fly into Santiago, long-distance buses (e.g., Turbus, Pullman) to Ovalle depart from Santiago’s bus terminals; overnight and daytime services take about 5.5-7 hours depending on the service and start around CLP 10,000-18,000. A private car drive is roughly the same time and considerably more expensive.
Train: There is no regular long-distance passenger rail service into Ovalle; Chile’s passenger rail network does not serve the city for intercity travel.
