How to Get to Oranjestad#
Oranjestad is served by Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA) a short drive from the centre. There’s no train service on Aruba; most visitors arrive by air and use buses, taxis or rental cars to get around.
Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA): The airport is about 5 km from central Oranjestad. Options into town include Arubus local buses (typical one-way fare around USD 2.75, journey ~15-20 minutes) and taxis (typical fare USD 10-15, ~10-15 minutes). Many hotels also offer paid transfers.
Train: Aruba has no heavy-rail service; there is no train station serving Oranjestad.
Bus: Arubus runs regular scheduled services linking the airport with Oranjestad and other parts of the island. Expect short journeys within Oranjestad of 10-20 minutes and fares around USD 2.75 one-way; taxis and hotel shuttles are the quicker (but costlier) alternative.
How to Get Around Oranjestad#
Oranjestad is best approached by air into Queen Beatrix International (AUA), then use the island’s Arubus network, taxis or a rental car to get around. For short stays, a mix of walking and short taxi or bus hops works best.
- Taxis (USD 10-25) - Metered and fixed-rate taxis are numerous in Oranjestad and the wider island. Taxis are the fastest way to move directly between the airport and hotels or between towns - expect short trips within Oranjestad to take 10-20 minutes. Agree a fare or confirm the meter before you go; cash (USD) is widely used.
- Arubus (public bus) (USD 2.75) - Arubus provides the main public service across the island, including a route between AUA and Oranjestad. Buses are cheap and frequent for short hops across town and between nearby resorts; expect journeys of 10-30 minutes depending on route. Buses are the most economical way to travel but can be slower than taxis.
- Car rental (USD 35-80/day (typical)) - Car hire is popular for exploring the island beyond Oranjestad; rental desks are available at AUA and in town. Roads are short and well signed, but parking in busy areas can be limited in high season. Fuel prices are higher than on the mainland, so factor that into budgets.
- Bicycles & scooters (USD 10-35/day) - Some hotels and local companies rent bicycles and scooters for short trips and sightseeing. These are handy for exploring coastal areas and the central city at low cost - ride with caution on busier roads and obey local helmet laws.
- Walking - Oranjestad’s core is compact and pedestrian-friendly: the waterfront, downtown shops and many hotels are walkable from each other. Walking is often faster than driving for very short trips and is the best way to soak up the colourful streets and harbour.
