Óc Eo
Archaeological Site Archaeological site of ancient Óc Eo port, Funan era
Archaeological site in An Giang tied to the ancient Óc Eo culture of Funan: mounds, canals and artifacts. Visitors come for excavations, local museums and early Southeast Asian trade history.
Óc Eo is an archaeological site and culture in An Giang province in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, identified with a major port of the ancient Funan polity and active from roughly the 2nd to the 7th centuries CE. It is significant as evidence of early maritime trade networks in Southeast Asia.
Remains are largely low earthen mounds, canal traces and scattered foundations with finds including beads, metalwork and imported goods. The site is visited for its archaeological importance rather than for monumental architecture; interpretive signs and small local displays explain major finds.
Excavations in the 20th century revealed stratified deposits and a rich array of artifacts that linked the site to regional and interregional trade. Scholars associate Óc Eo with the port and settlement system described in early historic sources for the Funan era.
The site lies in the Mekong Delta region of An Giang province in southern Vietnam, on low-lying alluvial terrain. It is accessed from provincial roads and is part of a wider landscape of rice paddies, canals and river channels.
- Site layout: Archaeological remains are dispersed across low mounds and former river channels rather than forming a single enclosed ruin, so visits involve field sites and small displays rather than a single monument.
- International connections: Material recovered at the site shows long-distance trade links with India, Southeast Asia and the wider Indian Ocean world during the early centuries CE.
Tips for Visiting Óc Eo #
- Visit the Óc Eo archaeological area in the dry season (roughly November-April) to avoid heavy rains and high heat; early morning visits are more comfortable and crowds are minimal.
- Pair the site with a local museum visit in An Giang and, if possible, hire a local guide-the scattered remains make more sense with archaeological context and local interpretation.
- Combine Óc Eo with nearby attractions in Thoại Sơn (including Sam Mountain) to make a fuller day of travel-many independent visitors only see the main site and miss nearby finds and displays.
