Pyongyang & West Coast Lowlands

Late-May warmth arrives and the countryside around Pyongyang becomes pleasantly warm and humid, with trees leafed out and farmland busy with planting. This is the prelude to the monsoon-daytime heat can feel sticky by late May, and mosquitoes start to appear near rivers. It’s an excellent time for riverside walks and visiting nearby historical sites before peak rains, but carry a light rain jacket and insect repellent. Tourist flows are still modest compared with summer.

Southwest & Kaesong/DMZ Borderlands

Warm, humid days start to creep in by May, bringing a lush look to lowland rice terraces near the border. Mosquitoes begin to be noticeable around streams and irrigation ditches, and evening temperatures stay comfortable for alfresco market dinners. This is a good window for cultural visits before peak rains arrive, but pack insect repellent and quick-dry clothes. Local agricultural life is busiest-visit morning markets to see harvest preparations and planting.

Central Highlands & Kaema Plateau

May finally softens the plateau’s edges: days warm noticeably though nights can be cool, and the landscape rapidly becomes more accessible as the snowline retreats. Waterfalls and rivers run high, making certain crossings lively; this is a good month for observing alpine flora and birdlife return. Roads improve but remain rough-pack layers for cool nights and durable footwear for muddy trails. Local transport and accommodation options start to reopen after winter suspensions.

Northeast & Mount Paektu (Hamgyong Mountains)

May provides clearer weather in coastal towns and lower valleys, with warmer days and nights still cool-ideal for scenic drives to foothills around Ryanggang. Mount Paektu’s lower slopes show first wildflowers though the summit remains snowbound; spring festivals in regional towns often mark the season’s agricultural restart. Road travel becomes more reliable, but overnight mountain camping requires warm sleeping gear. Expect fewer insects than lowlands and dramatic melting waterfalls.

East Coast & Wonsan / Mount Kumgang

Warm and humid weather arrives in May, with clearer, hotter days and increased marine humidity-perfect for coastal walks but bringing more insects near estuaries. The sea warms slowly, but it’s not reliably beach weather; rather, it’s excellent for boat trips and coastal photography. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent, and be aware that afternoon showers become more frequent as the month progresses. Local seafood markets begin to swell with seasonal catches.
