Pyongyang & West Coast Lowlands
Late-winter here stays crisp and dry; February keeps Pyongyang under cold, sunny skies with occasional blustery outbreaks. With the ground frozen and little precipitation, the cityscape is easy to explore but countryside trails remain snow-packed or icy; ferry services on the Taedong River may be limited. Dress in layers and plan indoor stops-markets and galleries give respite from wind on clear, bright days. Spring is still only a hint at month’s end, so don’t pack light.
Southwest & Kaesong/DMZ Borderlands
February remains sharply wintry in the borderlands, though sunny spells help soften the chill by midday. With the landscape still dormant tourism is slow-this is a practical month for off-season visits to historic Kaesong sites without crowds, but layers are necessary as temperatures swing. Mud is less of a problem than ice, and the early budding at the month’s end hints at spring. Plan indoor stops and flexible day trips that avoid narrow, untreated roads.
Central Highlands & Kaema Plateau
February keeps the highlands deep in winter; persistent snowpack and frozen rivers make the plateau appear windswept and remote. Clear, frigid days alternate with overcast storms that can dump fresh snow on mountain tracks, and trekking is generally impractical without specialised equipment. Travel is best limited to organized, supported trips; pack insulated layers, crampons if you plan to mount snowy trails, and allow extra time for journeys on snowbound roads.
Northeast & Mount Paektu (Hamgyong Mountains)
February remains a full winter in the northeast: mountain roads are snow-choked and inland passes are unreliable, while coastal towns experience cold, blustery conditions with clear skies between storms. The summit of Mount Paektu stays well below freezing and often has high winds-only well-equipped, guided parties attempt the highest routes. For travelers, packed snowtrailed roads limit independent exploration; bring thermal layers and plan for slow travel and possible schedule changes.
East Coast & Wonsan / Mount Kumgang
February keeps the coast in a wintry mode but with more variable conditions-some days are clear and crisp while others bring snowfall from passing systems. Mount Kumgang’s lower trails may be snow-dusted but accessible with proper footwear; coastal roads can be icy in the mornings. This is a quiet time for visits, so bring insulated layers and check local transport availability before planning day trips to seaside vistas.
