Pyongyang & West Coast Lowlands
By April the thaw accelerates and rivers swell-fields around the Chongchon plain start greening while urban parks show cherry blossoms later than in Seoul. Rain is still modest compared with summer, but spring showers are frequent and can make rural tracks sloppy; bird migration picks up along the coast for keen watchers. This is a good window for fewer crowds and lower prices, but keep waterproofs and expect chilly nights. Ferry runs to coastal islands resume more reliably as sea conditions calm.
Southwest & Kaesong/DMZ Borderlands
April shows clear signs of spring: orchards and roadside blossoms appear, and daytimes become pleasantly mild-ideal for short hikes in nearby hills and visits to traditional villages. Occasional showers can follow warm spells, making trails muddy, yet the air is generally fresher than northern plains because the mountains cut the wind. Tourist activity picks up, so book transport ahead if travelling around holiday weekends. Lightweight layers and a rain jacket will cover most weather surprises.
Central Highlands & Kaema Plateau
April brings a messy transition: lower valleys green up while higher ground remains under snow-muddy track conditions and residual ice are common. Early wildflowers begin at lower elevations and small streams swell with meltwater; spring storms can still drop snow on the highest ridges. This is a cautious shoulder season for travel-the scenery changes fast, so bring flexible plans, waterproof boots and expect some road closures. Organized trips are the safest way to penetrate the interior now.
Northeast & Mount Paektu (Hamgyong Mountains)
April brings a firm spring transition: lower elevations green up and streams roar with meltwater, while higher elevations remain snowy and unstable. Trails can be muddy and some mountain access routes may still be closed; the mountain lake slowly loses its ice cover depending on the year’s severity. Travellers should schedule buffer days for mountain excursions and travel with local guides for safety. A mix of waterproof outerwear, warm mid-layers and sturdy boots will cover most conditions.
East Coast & Wonsan / Mount Kumgang
April sees a steady green-up along the shoreline and lower mountain slopes by Mount Kumgang display early wildflowers and blossom. Sea breezes moderate daytime temperatures, making cliff walks and coastal drives appealing; sudden spring showers are still possible. Take a lightweight windproof and a mid-layer, and expect comfortable daytime exploring with chillier evenings. Local ferry excursions resume more reliably, offering coastal views and island forays when seas are calm.
