The New Jerusalem Monastery (Voskresensky Novy Ierusalim) is a 17th-century Russian Orthodox monastery near the town of Istra in Moscow Oblast, founded in 1656 by Patriarch Nikon. It was conceived as a Russian reproduction of key sites of Jerusalem and became a major ecclesiastical complex.
Visitors see a large ensemble dominated by the Resurrection Cathedral, monastic buildings and museum spaces containing icons and fresco fragments. The complex is noted for its 17th-century design intent and later architectural features from restoration campaigns.
The monastery was established by Patriarch Nikon in the mid-17th century and developed as an important religious centre; it suffered heavy damage during World War II and was the subject of large-scale postwar restoration. Conservation and rebuilding in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods restored many churches and halls.
The complex is located near Istra, about 40 kilometres west of central Moscow, on the Istra River. It sits in a suburban-wooded landscape west of the Moscow metropolitan area.
