About Neak Ta Khleang Moung#

Just outside Pursat town stands an unusual shrine dedicated to a Cambodian general and his wife. Fountains and gardens surround the shrine, where the couple are honoured in sculptures standing above an open pit into which donations are occasionally offered.

Khleang Moung was a Cambodian general who took his own life before a battle with invading Siamese forces; according to legend his powerful spirit went on to help Cambodian troops defeat the invaders. The shrine marks the spot of the pit where he and his wife are said to have died, and it remains a place of local reverence built around a memorable tale.
