How to Get to Narganá#
Narganá (part of the Guna Yala/San Blas archipelago) is reached from Panama City overland to the coastal launch points (most commonly Cartí) and then by boat. There are no direct flights or trains to the islands - expect a road transfer followed by a boat ride.
Tocumen International (PTY): Panama City’s Tocumen is the main international airport for trips to the San Blas / Guna Yala islands including Narganá. From Panama City most travellers transfer overland to the coastal villages of Cartí or Puerto Obaldía before taking a boat to Narganá (overland transfer times typically 3-4 hours depending on route and traffic).
David (DAV) / Regional airports: There are no direct flights to the San Blas islands; regional airports are not a practical alternative for reaching Narganá - overland transfer from Panama City remains the standard route.
Train: Panama has no cross-country passenger rail service linking Panama City to the Caribbean coast; trains are not an option.
Bus: Shared shuttles and public buses run from Panama City (Albrook or terminal points) to the Caribbean embarkation points such as Cartí. From Cartí you take a boat (typically 30-60 minutes) to Narganá; public shuttles and boats are the common ways to reach the islands.
How to Get Around Narganá#
Reaching Narganá requires an overland transfer from Panama City to a departure port (Cartí) and then a short boat ride - plan for multi-stage logistics and book shuttles/boats in advance where possible. Once on the island, everything is on foot or by small boat.
- Shared shuttle / bus to Cartí ($6-$30) - Most travellers take a shuttle or public bus from Panama City to Cartí (the main boat departure point for many Guna Yala islands). Journeys are several hours and schedules depend on departure times to match the boat service; book shuttles in advance during high season.
- Boat (Cartí to Narganá) ($5-$25) - From Cartí a boat transfer (motorboat) takes you across the archipelago to Narganá - travel times typically 30-60 minutes depending on sea conditions. Boats are usually arranged through local operators or your accommodation; pay attention to tide and weather information.
- Taxi / private transfer (Panama City) ($60-$150) - Private transfers from Panama City directly to the Cartí launch points are quicker and more comfortable than public buses but cost more; useful if you have luggage or want door-to-door service. Prices vary by company and vehicle size.
- Local dugout boats / water taxi ($2-$15) - On arrival in the islands, local small boats (dugouts) and water taxis operate between nearby cays and settlements. These are practical for short hops between islands but can be exposed to weather.
- Walking - Narganá is compact and pedestrian-only; once ashore you’ll get around entirely on foot - paths connect houses, shops and landing points and most island travel is by walking or small boat.
