The Archipiélago de San Blas, administered by the Guna Yala comarca, is a Caribbean chain of low-lying islands and cays off the northeast coast of Panama; it comprises roughly a year-round supply of small islands and islets inhabited and managed by the Guna people. The archipelago is noted for its many small sandy islets and traditional indigenous communities.

Sand beaches, shallow reefs and Guna village islands are the main attractions, with opportunities for swimming, snorkeling and cultural visits to Guna settlements. Many islands are tiny and lightly developed, and visitors often move between multiple islets by local boat.

The islands have been inhabited by the Guna people for centuries and remain under Guna local administration, preserving traditional ways of life alongside tourism. Small-scale boat services and island-run guest accommodations form the primary visitor infrastructure.

The archipelago lies off Panama’s Caribbean coast in the autonomous comarca of Guna Yala, east-northeast of Panama City and along the coastline between the large mainland ports and the Caribbean open sea.

San Blas (Guna Yala) islands are reached from the Panamanian mainland via the port of Cartí (Carti). From Panama City travel by road on the Pan‑American Highway / Interamericana (CA‑1) to the Cartí turnoff, then take a local speedboat to the islands (boat rides vary by island; many are roughly 30-90 minutes). Several tour operators also run day and multi‑day boat transfers from Panama City.

Small charter flights and island transfers are operated by local carriers from Albrook (Marcos A. Gelabert) and other local airfields to some Guna Yala airstrips; otherwise use road to Cartí plus boat. Once at Cartí you board local pangas - no long walks from the piers.

• Plan visits in the dry season (roughly December-April) for calmer seas and more reliable boat transfers; many operators run daily launches from Cartí, so confirm departure times a day ahead because weather and tides often change schedules.
• Book transport and accommodation through a Guna-run lodge or licensed operator rather than turning up in Panama City - most arrivals require a road transfer to the Cartí terminal and a short boat ride, and locally organized stays simplify logistics and respect community rules.
• Stay overnight on an island instead of doing a rushed day trip: islands are small and day-trippers concentrate at the most accessible beaches, while an overnight lets you see quieter islets and visit a Guna village to view traditional mola handicrafts, which many day visitors miss.
• Bring sufficient cash (US dollars are widely used) and check in advance about limited services: many islands have no card facilities or ATM access, so purchases and community fees are usually cash-only.
