Archaeological Site Ancient Maya city with large temple plazas
In Petén, Nakum exposes Classic Maya plazas, stairways and temple-pyramids set in tall forest; archaeologists and hikers visit for ruins, jungle trails and wildlife viewing.
Nakum is a Classic Maya archaeological site in the Petén Department of northern Guatemala featuring plazas, pyramids, an acropolis and carved stelae. The major occupation phases at the site date to the Late Classic period when Nakum functioned as a regional political and ceremonial centre.
Key archaeological elements include formal plazas framed by pyramidal structures and residential platforms, along with stone monuments and stairways. The layout shows the civic-ceremonial core typical of Classic Maya urban centres.
Nakum rose and fell within the Classic Maya political landscape and shares architectural and epigraphic links with nearby Maya sites. Its monuments and architectural groups reflect the civic, ritual and administrative activities of the site’s elite during its peak.
Nakum is located within the forested Petén region of northern Guatemala, an area dense with Maya archaeological sites and tropical lowland rainforest.
