How to Get to Mzuzu
Mzuzu is served by a small regional airport (Mzuzu Airport, ZZU) and by road links to Malawi's main international airport in Lilongwe (Kamuzu International, LLW). There is no reliable passenger rail service to the city; most visitors arrive by air to ZZU or by bus/minibus from Lilongwe, Nkhata Bay or Karonga.
Mzuzu Airport (ZZU): Mzuzu Airport is the closest aerodrome to the city, about 8-12 km from the centre. From the airport you can take a metered or negotiated taxi into town (roughly 2,000-5,000 MWK, 15-25 minutes depending on traffic) or arrange a hotel pickup.
Kamuzu International Airport, Lilongwe (LLW): Kamuzu International is Malawi’s main international airport and the usual arrival point for international flights. From Lilongwe you can reach Mzuzu by intercity bus or shared minibus (see Bus below) - typical travel time is about 4-6 hours and fares commonly range from ~3,000-6,000 MWK; private car transfers cost more but are faster and more comfortable (allow 3.5-5 hours).
Train: There is no regular passenger rail service to Mzuzu. Malawi’s rail freight network does not provide reliable scheduled passenger connections to Mzuzu, so trains are not a practical option for most travellers.
Bus: Mzuzu Bus Terminal (the main bus station) is the hub for intercity and regional services. Regular minibuses and coaches run between Mzuzu and Lilongwe, Nkhata Bay and Karonga; typical bus journeys: Lilongwe-Mzuzu ~4-6 hours (≈3,000-6,000 MWK), Nkhata Bay-Mzuzu ~1.5-3 hours (≈1,000-3,000 MWK). Buses and shared minibuses are frequent but vary in comfort - buy tickets at the terminal when possible and allow extra time for waits.

Getting around Mzuzu works best by a mix of shared minibuses for local budget travel and taxis or private cars for comfort and convenience. Central Mzuzu is walkable for short errands; for trips outside the city (Lilongwe, Nkhata Bay, Karonga) plan for multi-hour bus journeys and allow time for informal schedules.
- Minibuses (Shared) (≈500-3,000 MWK) - Shared minibuses (often called kombis) are the most common public transport between towns and for short trips around Mzuzu. They depart from the central bus terminal and along main roads; expect to wait until a vehicle fills up. Fares are low and vary by route; seats can be cramped and timetables informal, so use them for short budgets trips rather than comfort.
- Taxis (2,000-6,000 MWK) - Taxis in Mzuzu are widely available and useful for door-to-door travel, especially at night or with luggage. Most vehicles are unmetered - always negotiate or confirm a price before you start. Expect fares from the airport to the centre or around town in the range given above; a pre-agreed fare is standard practice.
- Motorcycle taxis (boda‑boda) (200-1,000 MWK) - Motorcycle taxis operate in and around Mzuzu and are handy for short trips where roads are narrow or traffic is slow.
