Northern Highlands (Kachin & far north)

The high valleys around Myitkyina and Putao are cool and dry this month, with mornings often near freezing at altitude and daytime sun feeling brisk. Lower river plains are pleasantly cool - a relief from the plains - but Hkakabo Razi’s upper slopes still hold snow and silk‑thin ice patches; climbing conditions are firm and access is limited. Travelers should pack a warm layer and expect clear skies that make river cruises and birding excellent; some remote roads remain dusty but passable.

Shan Plateau & Eastern Highlands (Inle Lake, Taunggyi)

Highland mornings at Inle Lake arrive cool and misty, with mid‑day temperatures pleasantly warm - a comfortable start to the trekking season. Markets around Nyaung Shwe are lively after the cool season, and lake boat rides are calm and clear; light layers and a fleece for dawn are sensible. The air is dry and visibility excellent for watching Shan villages and visiting hilltop pagodas without the humidity of lower plains.

Central Dry Zone (Mandalay, Bagan, Meiktila)

January mornings in Mandalay and Bagan are dry, cool and comfortable - perfect for temples at sunrise when dust is low and the light is crisp. Daytime warmth is moderate, making cycling around Bagan’s pagodas an easy pleasure, though you’ll still want sun protection for midday explorations. This is peak season so expect larger tour groups and book river cruises and hot‑air balloon rides early.

Irrawaddy Delta & Yangon Region

January in Yangon and the delta is blissfully dry and pleasantly warm - humidity is low by local standards and mornings are clear enough to walk around Kandawgyi Lake or the colonial downtown. Boat services through the delta villages run reliably and the alleys of Dala are comfortable to explore on bicycle. Bring a light jacket for breezy river evenings and expect larger numbers of other visitors at popular Yangon sights.

Rakhine Coast & Western Lowlands (Ngapali, Sittwe, Mrauk-U)

January is peak season on the Rakhine coast: dry, sunny days and temperate nights make Ngapali’s beaches and Mrauk‑U’s ruins very pleasant to explore. Sea conditions are usually calm and boat trips to offshore fishing villages run reliably; it’s a great month for snorkeling and beach days. Expect more domestic visitors and higher prices, so book seaside accommodation early.

Tanintharyi Coast & Mergui Archipelago (Dawei, Kawthaung, Mergui islands)

January offers textbook tropical island weather: sunshine, low humidity and calm seas around the Mergui Archipelago that make island‑hopping and snorkeling delightful. Kawthaung is warm with reliable boat services to remote atolls and excellent visibility for diving. Expect higher demand for liveaboard trips, so book dives and accommodation early and bring light, breathable clothing plus reef‑safe sunscreen.
