Northern Highlands (Kachin & far north)

Deep into the cool, dry season the high valleys are crisp and often cloudless: frost is possible on the highest passes while mid‑day feels like late spring. Peak season means reliable road and air links but also busier guesthouses in Putao and Myitkyina, so book in advance. This is the most comfortable time for highland expeditions and for visiting remote ethnic markets, with very low chance of rain but decidedly chilly dawns.

Shan Plateau & Eastern Highlands (Inle Lake, Taunggyi)

December is distinctly cool, especially after sunset, and the highlands can feel close to alpine chill compared with Yangon; pack a warm coat for evenings. Clear, clean air gives spectacular mountain vistas and calm boat rides on Inle Lake, but night markets draw local crowds so book accommodation sooner rather than later. Daytime sunshine makes visiting hill farms and tea stalls a pleasure, though frost is possible on the highest ridges in cold snaps.

Central Dry Zone (Mandalay, Bagan, Meiktila)

December is pleasantly warm during the day with cool nights, making it one of the best months for cycling, hot‑air ballooning over Bagan, and long boat trips on the Ayeyarwady. Tourist crowds remain high and festival activities around pagodas make for lively evenings. Pack sunblock and a medium‑weight layer for after‑dark; expect very low rainfall and excellent road conditions for overland journeys.

Irrawaddy Delta & Yangon Region

December keeps the mild, dry conditions with warm days and crisp nights - an ideal month for exploring both Yangon and the wide mangrove networks of the delta. Holiday bookings increase and prices for Yangon hotels tend to be higher, so reserve in advance. Bring sunscreen and a light jacket for cooler riverfront nights; overall travel is at its most comfortable this month.

Rakhine Coast & Western Lowlands (Ngapali, Sittwe, Mrauk-U)

December stays comfortably warm with low humidity and bright sunshine; the beaches are at their most pleasant and Mrauk‑U’s dusty tracks are easy to navigate. This is peak season for travel to Ngapali, so anticipate fuller resorts and higher rates. Bring sunscreen, a hat for midday, and reserve accommodations and boat tours well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Tanintharyi Coast & Mergui Archipelago (Dawei, Kawthaung, Mergui islands)

December stays warm with low humidity and calm seas - arguably the best month for extended island hopping, diving and beach relaxation along the Tanintharyi coast. Holiday demand rises and popular routes fill, especially around Kawthaung; reserve liveaboards and accommodations well in advance. Pack reef‑friendly sunscreen, a light long‑sleeve for sun and an evening sweater for seaside breezes.
