Mounts Iglit-Baco National Park

Mounts Iglit-Baco National Park is a protected area on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines established to conserve upland forest and native wildlife. The park is named for its two principal massifs, Mount Iglit and Mount Baco, and is the principal refuge of the endemic tamaraw.

Terrain inside the park is rugged - a mix of forest, grassland and steep slopes - with trails used for patrolling and occasional eco-tours. Wildlife viewing focuses on the tamaraw and other forest species; trekking and guided nature visits are the usual ways to see the park.

The area was given legal protection in the 1970s specifically to safeguard the tamaraw and remaining natural habitats from hunting and conversion. Conservation management since then has included population monitoring and ranger patrols.

The park occupies upland interior areas of Mindoro island; the nearest population centres and access points are on Mindoro rather than on Luzon, and overland approaches are required to reach the park’s trailheads.

• Tamaraw sanctuary: Home to the tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis), an endemic and endangered dwarf buffalo species whose remaining wild population is protected inside the park.
• Visitor access: Access and visitor facilities are limited; organised visits and guided treks are commonly used to reach wildlife viewing areas safely.
