Mount Stromboli

Mount Stromboli is an active stratovolcano on the island of Stromboli in the Aeolian Islands, northern Sicily, with a summit elevation of about 924 meters. It is one of the most persistently active volcanoes in the world and a classic example of Strombolian-style eruptions.

The volcano has been intermittently erupting for millennia and was noted in historical sources as a conspicuous source of light for sailors. Its persistent explosive activity has shaped the island and produced repeated lava flows and flank collapses that formed features such as the Sciara del Fuoco.

Stromboli sits at the northern end of the Aeolian archipelago, north of mainland Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The island is served by regular passenger boats from nearby Aeolian islands and from ports on northeastern Sicily.

What to See #

• Summit craters: Active summit craters produce regular explosive bursts of incandescent lava, ash and gas; access to the crater area is restricted and usually only possible with licensed guides for safety reasons.
• Sciara del Fuoco: A steep scar on the northwest flank that channels lava and pyroclastic material into the sea and is the route for most effusive flows and rockfalls.
• Island villages and harbors: Small settlements on the island including the main harbour village and the hamlet of Ginostra provide accommodation and boat connections to neighboring Aeolian islands and Sicily.
