Vulcano is an Aeolian Island off the north coast of Sicily and is a volcanic island with fumarolic activity, volcanic sands and a prominent summit crater. It is part of the Italian region of Sicily and is one of the closely grouped Aeolian islands that lie north of Sicily.

Visitors hike to volcanic features such as the crater rim and thermal fumaroles, walk along black sand beaches and sample local mud baths in permitted areas. The island’s volcanic character is its main attraction, offering short climbs and coastal scenery rather than large built attractions.

The island has a history of sulphur extraction and small-scale habitation; its volcanic activity has influenced both landscape and local industry. Eruptive activity has occurred in historical times, with notable events in the 19th century, and fumarolic activity continues to be visible.

Vulcano sits in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Sicily as part of the Aeolian archipelago and is often visited by ferry from Milazzo and other Aeolian islands.

Reach the Aeolian island of Vulcano by ferry or hydrofoil from the Sicilian ports of Milazzo (the most common) and sometimes Messina/Torrenova; services land at Vulcano’s main port (Porto). Milazzo is the usual mainland gateway-reach Milazzo by train or road from larger Sicilian cities, then transfer to a ferry/hydrofoil to Vulcano.

• Aim to hike the Gran Cratere early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat and the peak influx of day-trip cruise passengers; lighting is also better for photos at those times.
• Ferries and hydrofoil services from Milazzo and Lipari are the standard ways to reach Vulcano-time your arrival with the last return boats if you plan an extended walk so you're not stranded.
• Stay on marked trails around fumaroles and respect local signage about sulfur emissions; the surface can be unstable and gas concentrations vary, so follow local advice and guides rather than venturing off-path.
