Stromboli Island

Stromboli is a volcanic island in the Aeolian Islands chain off the north coast of Sicily, Italy. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is noted for frequent small explosive eruptions.

The island’s eruptions are characteristically intermittent and explosive, producing incandescent bombs and ash that can be observed from safe viewpoints and boat tours. The Sciara del Fuoco is the principal slope where recent lava and volcanic debris descend to the sea, forming a dramatic profile visible from the surrounding waters.

Historically the island has been inhabited intermittently and its volcanic activity has shaped settlement patterns and local infrastructure. Authorities maintain monitoring and safety regimes to manage visitor access during active periods.

Stromboli sits in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Sicily and is administratively part of the Sicily region. Ferries connect it with Milazzo and other Aeolian Islands during the tourism season.

Take a ferry or hydrofoil to Stromboli from the Sicilian ports of Milazzo or from the other Aeolian Islands (services are seasonal). Ferries land at the small harbour on Stromboli; from the harbour it’s a short walk uphill to the village and to the trailheads used for visits to the volcanic area (boat taxis also operate to nearby beaches).

• Aim to start the official summit hike late afternoon so you arrive at the upper observation area at dusk - that timing gives the best light to watch Strombolian activity and avoids the midday heat.
• Use the main port at Stromboli village as your arrival point and book an authorized local guide (required for upper-slope access) through the tourist office or a licensed operator in advance - guides handle route safety and the regulated access above ~400 m.
• If you want a quieter perspective, take a licensed boat trip to view the Sciara del Fuoco from the sea at sunset rather than from the crowded summit trail; book with a reputable operator to ensure safe viewing distances and compliance with restrictions.
