Mount Salak is an eroded stratovolcano in West Java, Indonesia, rising above the Bogor and Sukabumi regions. The mountain reaches about 2,211 metres and is covered in dense tropical montane forest.

Trails lead up through rainforest and ridgelines to viewpoints; the terrain and frequent cloud cover make weather unpredictable and river crossings can be hazardous during heavy rain. The slopes include crater remnants, caves and steep ravines which attract hikers and researchers of volcanic geomorphology.

The mountain is a product of volcanic activity along Java’s volcanic arc and shows the typical layered structure of a stratovolcano, now heavily eroded and dissected by tropical weathering. It is near populated areas of West Java and has been the site of multiple aviation accidents due to surrounding terrain and often poor visibility.

Mount Salak sits south of the Greater Jakarta metropolitan area in West Java, within the highland zone that separates coastal plains from interior valleys. The mountain forms part of a chain of volcanic peaks on Java’s western segment and is visible from surrounding lowlands on clear days.

  • Proximity to Jakarta: Located within a few hours' drive of Jakarta and the Bogor area, making it a common target for weekend hikes from the capital region.

There is no single train directly to the mountain-use Bogor as the nearest rail hub and transfer by road.

Tips for Visiting Mount Salak #

  • Aim for an early-morning start from the Bogor side of West Java to enjoy clearer views before low cloud and fog frequently roll in later in the day.
  • Use a reputable local guide from Bogor or nearby towns who knows the maze of jungle tracks and the mountain's wet microclimate-guides also know safer, less-eroded lines and local entry points.
  • Ask your guide to include lower-elevation forest features (cold springs and crater-forest areas) on the approach; many day-trippers focus only on the summit and miss these unique habitats.
