Gunung Gede Mountain

Gunung Gede is a stratovolcano in West Java, Indonesia, whose summit reaches 2,958 meters above sea level. It forms part of the Gede Pangrango National Park and is paired with the adjacent Mount Pangrango as a major highland and biodiversity area in western Java.

Hikers use established trails from trailheads such as Cibodas to reach the summit, often as an overnight trek to catch sunrise. The mountain’s slopes include montane rainforest, mossy cloud forest and higher-elevation meadows and crater features, and the park is noted for plant and bird diversity.

The volcano is part of a protected national park established to conserve the area’s flora and fauna and to regulate recreational use. Visitor management typically includes registration at park offices or trailheads and marked routes to the summit.

Gunung Gede lies in West Java, within reach of the greater Bogor area and Jakarta region; it is one of the principal highland hiking destinations for residents of West Java.

What to See#

• Cibodas trailhead: The Cibodas trailhead is the most commonly used entrance for climbs, with park facilities and permit points providing access to trails that lead to the summit.
• Summit (Puncak Gede): The summit area of Gunung Gede, often called Puncak Gede, rises above montane forest and offers views across West Java; the climb is usually undertaken as an overnight or long day hike.
• High-altitude crater and montane zones: A crater and high montane zones above the treeline that feature stunted vegetation, mossy forest and alpine meadows within the national park.

From Jakarta: take the commuter train (KRL) to Bogor station (approximately 1-1.5 hours). From Bogor, minibuses/angkots and regular private transport run to Cibodas (about 45-60 minutes). Trailheads (Cibodas, Gunung Putri, Selabintana) have park offices where registration and basic permits are handled.

• If climbing, register at the Cibodas park office and hire a local porter or guide - trails can be slippery after rain.
• Start before dawn from Cibodas to avoid afternoon storms and to catch cloud inversion views over Jakarta's plain.
• Bring layered rain gear and a headlamp if attempting summit pre-dawn; temperatures at the ridge can be near freezing.
