Mount Nyenchen Tanglha
Mountain Glaciated Himalayan-range massif in Tibet
On the Tibetan Plateau Mount Nyenchen Tanglha runs as a glaciated range north of Lhasa; mountaineers and overland travelers seek remote passes, high-altitude trekking and Tibetan pastoral landscapes.
Mount Nyenchen Tanglha (Nyainqêntanglha) is a major mountain massif and range on the northern Tibetan Plateau, north of Lhasa. The range includes multiple high peaks that rise above 7,000 meters and form an important regional watershed.
The area is noted for long north-facing glaciers and high alpine terrain; mountaineering routes are serious undertakings because of altitude and remoteness. Few developed facilities exist along the massif, so expeditions require self-sufficiency and acclimatization.
The range is part of the greater Tibetan highlands and was formed by Himalayan tectonics that uplifted the plateau. Over time glacial action has carved cirques and valleys across the massifs.
Geographically the Nyenchen Tanglha mountains lie north of Lhasa on the central Tibetan Plateau, forming a high topographic barrier between central Tibet and the northern river basins.
- Elevation range: Peaks in the range exceed 7,000 meters and form a major north-south watershed on the northern Tibetan Plateau.
- Access considerations: Remote high-altitude conditions mean access requires extended overland travel from Lhasa and acclimatization for climbs.
