Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains Mountains

The Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains are a major mountain range on the northern side of the central Tibetan Plateau in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. The range is composed of high, glaciated peaks and forms a significant drainage and climatic divide in central Tibet.

The mountains include several peaks above 6,000 and 7,000 metres and feed glaciers and alpine lakes in their valleys. The range is also associated with Tibetan cultural and religious traditions, with certain peaks regarded as sacred in local belief.

Geologically the Nyenchen Tanglha are part of the uplifted Tibetan highlands and sit north of Lhasa, forming part of the rim of the high plateau and separating watersheds that drain toward the interior of Tibet from those that flow into larger river systems to the south and east.

• Highest peak: The range contains glaciated high peaks that exceed 7,000 metres, with the highest summit commonly recorded at about 7,162 metres above sea level.

The Nyenchen Tanglha (Nyainqêntanglha) range lies on the northern Tibetan Plateau; the common gateway city is Lhasa. Travelers reach Lhasa by the Qinghai-Tibet Railway or by flight, then continue by road north or northeast toward highland access points; drives from Lhasa into the range take several hours and involve remote mountain roads.

Foreign visitors should be aware travel in Tibet requires a valid Tibet Travel Permit and that routes into the Nyenchen Tanglha are remote - local guided overland transfers or trekking arrangements from Lhasa or nearby towns are the standard approaches.
