Mount Halimun Salak National Park is a protected rainforest area in West Java that includes the volcanic massifs of Mount Halimun and Mount Salak. The park preserves extensive montane and lowland forest close to Java’s densely populated lowlands.

The area was designated as a protected park to conserve remaining rainforest and watershed values for the region; park boundaries encompass a mix of steep ridgelines and valley forests. Over time the park has become an important site for conservation work and environmental education.

The park lies on the western side of Java, southeast of Jakarta and near the city of Bogor; it occupies rugged, forested terrain on the slopes of the Halimun and Salak massifs and forms an important green belt for the region.

  • Size and proximity to Jakarta: One of the largest remaining areas of rainforest on Java, located within easy reach of Jakarta and Bogor to the northwest.
  • Biodiversity: Important habitat for Javan endemic species, including the endangered Javan gibbon and other primates and birdlife.

What to See #

  • Halimun and Salak massifs: The higher volcanic massifs within the park - including the peaks of Mount Halimun and Mount Salak - that provide the park's main ridgelines and watersheds.
