Ming tombs
Amusement Park Imperial burial complex of Ming dynasty emperors
North of Beijing, the Ming Tombs form a necropolis of imperial burial mounds and a ceremonial spirit way; tourists inspect surviving mausolea, stone guardians and the complex’s role in Ming dynastic ritual geography.
The Ming Tombs are an imperial funerary complex north of Beijing that contains the mausoleums of thirteen Ming dynasty emperors, along with attendant temples, spirit ways and ceremonial architecture. The site was selected and developed over several centuries as the principal burial ground for Ming imperial burials.
Visitors walk the Spirit Way lined with stone sculptures and visit several tomb mounds and sacrificial halls; one tomb, Dingling, was excavated and is open to the public as a museum showing burial chambers and artifacts. The overall layout follows principles of geomancy and imperial ritual.
Construction and burials at the site span the 15th to 17th centuries, reflecting Ming burial practices and state ritual; the complex has been partially excavated and conserved with several tombs maintained as museum spaces while others remain as preserved mounds. The site is a well-known heritage attraction near Beijing.
The tomb cluster lies in the Changping district to the north of Beijing, approximately 50 kilometres from the city centre by road, set in a valley with rolling hills and accessible as a day trip from Beijing.
- Location and scale: The complex contains the tombs of 13 Ming emperors and is located roughly 50 kilometres north-northwest of central Beijing, making it a common half-day or day trip from the capital.
What to See #
- Dingling: An underground imperial tomb that was excavated and is accessible to visitors, containing preserved burial chambers and displayed artifacts from the Ming imperial collection.
- Spirit Way: A ceremonial approach lined with stone statues of animals and officials leading to the cluster of tomb mounds; this avenue forms the symbolic route to the tombs.
- Changling: The largest of the Ming tombs complexes, built for an early Ming emperor, featuring an extensive above-ground burial mound and surrounding halls.
How to Get to Ming tombs #
The Ming Tombs (Thirteen Tombs area) are about 40-50 km northwest of central Beijing; by car expect roughly a 1-1.5 hour drive depending on traffic via the Badaling/Beijing-Lhasa Expressway (G6) and local Changping roads, with parking at the site entrance. Tourist shuttle buses and private car hires run from Beijing’s northern bus stations and major hotels to the Ming Tombs area; once at the complex the main tomb access points are a short walk (few hundred metres) from the parking/visitor area.
Tips for Visiting Ming tombs #
- Visit early morning right at opening to avoid the coach crowds that arrive later; the cooler light also gives better photos of the Sacred Way and gate buildings.
- Enter via the Shisanling (Ming Tombs) Visitor Centre so you can use the site shuttle to reach the main tombs-that saves a long walk and you can decide which tomb museum (Dingling) to visit first.
- Don't stop at the excavated Dingling alone: continue along the Sacred Way toward the less-visited tombs for quieter views and intact stone guardian statues that many tour groups skip.
Best Time to Visit Ming tombs #
