How to Get to Mezzegra#
Mezzegra sits on the western shore of central Lake Como; arriving via Milan airports then regional train to Como or Varenna and a short ferry or bus transfer is the simplest and most scenic route.
Milan Malpensa (MXP) / Linate (LIN): Milan airports are the main international gateways for Mezzegra and the western Lake Como area. From Malpensa take the Malpensa Express to Milano Centrale or Cadorna (approx 40-50 minutes, fare ~€13). From Milano Centrale take a regional train to Como S. Giovanni (about 40-60 minutes, €4-€6) or to Varenna‑Esino (approx 1h10).
Orio al Serio (BGY) / Lugano (LUG): Other nearby airports can be used depending on carrier and season, but Milan airports offer the most direct public transport connections to Lake Como.
Train: From Milano Centrale take regional trains to either Como S. Giovanni (west shore) or Varenna‑Esino (east/central lake). Como S. Giovanni is about 40-60 minutes and fares are typically €4-€6. From those stations you can take local buses or ferries to reach Mezzegra/Tremezzo.
Bus / Ferry: Lake Como ferries connect ferry landings such as Varenna, Menaggio and Tremezzo/Mezzegra. Short ferry hops cost roughly €3-€6 depending on distance; combined train + ferry is usually the easiest way to reach Mezzegra from Milano.
How to Get Around Mezzegra#
The easiest public route is Milan → regional train → ferry. Trains to Como or Varenna plus a short ferry to Mezzegra combine speed and scenery; local buses and taxis cover gaps in the timetable.
- Regional train (Milan → Como / Varenna) (€4-€6) - Regional trains from Milano Centrale to Como S. Giovanni or Varenna‑Esino are frequent and economical. From either station you transfer to a bus or ferry for the final leg to Mezzegra; trains are the fastest public option from Milan.
- Ferry (Lake Como) (€3-€10) - Ferries connect Mezzegra/Tremezzo with Varenna, Menaggio and Como. Ferries are regular in high season and are the most scenic way to move along the lake; fares vary by distance but short crossings are around €3-€6.
- Local bus (€1.5-€3) - Local ASF buses serve the west shore and link to nearby towns and ferry landings. Buses are useful for short inland connections where ferries do not run; buy tickets at a tabacchi or on board where permitted.
- Taxi / Private transfer (€60+) - Taxis and private transfers can collect you from Como station or Milan airports and drive directly to Mezzegra. This is convenient with luggage or off‑schedule connections but is considerably more expensive than train + ferry.
- Car (self‑drive) - Driving along the lakeshore gives maximum flexibility but watch for narrow roads and limited parking in lakeside villages. In summer traffic can be slow; parking is easier off the main streets.
- Walking - Mezzegra and neighbouring villages are compact, with lakeside promenades and short trails. Walking is the best way to enjoy the lakeshore and reach local cafés and viewpoints.
