How to Get to Cadenabbia#
Cadenabbia on the western shore of Lake Como is easiest reached via Milan’s airports (Malpensa, Linate) or Bergamo, then by a Trenord regional train to Varenna or Como and a short ferry. Ferries are frequent in season and often the most pleasant way to arrive at Cadenabbia.
Milan Malpensa (MXP): Malpensa is the largest airport serving the Lake Como area. From MXP you can take the Malpensa Express to Milano Cadorna or Centrale (about €13, 30-40 minutes) then a regional Trenord train to Varenna-Esino or to Como San Giovanni; total travel time to the Varenna/Cadenabbia area is commonly 1.5-2 hours depending on connections. Direct shuttle buses from MXP to Como are available (roughly €10-€15, 50-75 minutes) and can be faster with fewer changes.
Milan Linate (LIN) / Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY): Linate is closer to Milan city center and useful if connecting via downtown train stations; Bergamo (BGY) has shuttle buses to Bergamo town and onward bus or train connections toward Lecco/Como. From Bergamo you typically travel by bus to Bergamo centre then by road/rail toward Lake Como; timings and prices vary by operator.
Train: Trenord regional trains run from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino (journey around 1h-1h15, fares often €4-€8 for regional services). From Varenna-Esino you can walk to the ferry terminal to reach Cadenabbia/Griante.
Bus / Ferry: Local buses run along the western shore but the most scenic and practical link to Cadenabbia is by ferry from Varenna or Como. Ferry single fares on Lake Como range from about €3.50 for short hops to €6-€7 for longer crossings; fast hydrofoils are pricier (around €10-€13). Check the Navigazione Laghi timetable for exact departures.
How to Get Around Cadenabbia#
The best approach is to fly into Milan (MXP/LIN) or Bergamo (BGY), take a train to Varenna or Como, then use the ferry network to reach Cadenabbia. Ferries are frequent in season and make for a scenic final leg; trains + ferry often beat direct road travel for speed and convenience.
- Regional Train (Trenord) (€4-€8) - Trenord services from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino or Como are reliable and economical. Buy regional tickets at stations or online; regional fares are cheap but trains can be crowded at peak times. From Varenna station it’s a short walk to the ferry terminal.
- Ferry (Navigazione Laghi) (€3.50-€13) - Ferries on Lake Como connect Varenna, Menaggio, Como and small lakeside towns including Cadenabbia. Regular ferries take 10-30 minutes depending on route; fast hydrofoils are quicker but cost more. Ferries can be delayed by weather; keep some schedule padding.
- Airport Shuttle / Bus (€10-€15) - Shuttle buses from Malpensa to Como or from Bergamo to the lakeshore are a practical single-ticket option if you prefer fewer changes than trains plus ferry. Buses typically drop-off in Como town; you then transfer by ferry or local bus.
- Car rental (From ~€40/day) - Driving gives flexibility for exploring lakeside villages and hill roads, but parking in popular towns (Como, Varenna) can be limited and paid. Narrow, winding roads near the shore demand cautious driving in high season.
- Taxi / Private transfer (€80+ (depending on origin)) - Taxis or private transfers from airports directly to Cadenabbia are door-to-door and comfortable, useful for groups or heavy luggage; they are significantly costlier than public options.
- Walking - Cadenabbia and nearby villages are compact and best explored on foot. Trails and lakeside promenades are pleasant, but hilly streets mean comfortable shoes are recommended.
