How to Get to Bellagio#
Bellagio sits at the tip of the peninsula between the two southern branches of Lake Como. Fly into Milan’s airports (MXP, LIN or BGY) and continue by train to Varenna or Como, then take the frequent ferries to Bellagio.
Milan Malpensa (MXP): One of the main international airports serving northern Italy. Take the Malpensa Express to Milano Centrale or Milano Cadorna (around €13, 35-50 minutes) then onward train to the Lake Como area.
Milan Linate (LIN) / Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY): Linate is closer to Milan city; Bergamo (BGY) is popular with low-cost carriers. From either airport take a bus or shuttle to Milano Centrale (from Bergamo bus ~50 minutes, €6-€10) and then rail connections north toward Varenna or Como.
Train: The easiest public route to Bellagio is via Varenna-Esino (on the Milan-Lecco-Sondrio line) or Como San Giovanni. Regional trains from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino take about 1h10 and cost roughly €4.60-€9 (regional fares). From Varenna the ferry to Bellagio is around 15 minutes and costs about €4-€6.
Bus / Ferry: From Como take the navigazione laghi ferry to Bellagio (journey ~1 hour, fares typically €6-€10 one-way) or a bus to nearby points and then a short ferry hop; check seasonal timetables for frequency.
How to Get Around Bellagio#
Bellagio is easiest reached by train to Varenna or Como followed by a short ferry across the lake. Ferries are the recommended, scenic option; driving is possible but parking can be limited in peak season.

Varenna is the fastest rail access to Bellagio by ferry (train ~1h10 to Varenna), while Como gives a different, scenic ferry route - book tickets at stations or online for busy periods.
- Ferry (Lake Como) (€4-€15) - Ferries are the most pleasant and practical way to reach Bellagio from both Varenna and Como. Crossing times are typically 15-60 minutes depending on route; buy tickets at the piers. Services are more frequent in summer and reduced in winter.
- Bus / Shuttle (€2-€10) - Buses connect Como and other lakeside towns to ferry terminals; shuttle services operate from Milan during high season. Buses are usually cheaper than taxis but slower than direct car transfers.
- Taxi / Private transfer (€120-€220 (Milan→Bellagio private transfer)) - Private transfers from Milan or airports are convenient if you have luggage or are travelling in a group - expect higher costs but direct door-to-door service. Travel time from Milan to Bellagio is typically 1.5-2 hours by car, depending on traffic.
- Car hire (€40-€100/day) - Hiring a car gives flexibility to explore the lake and surrounding towns; parking in Bellagio is limited and can be busy in summer. Roads are scenic but narrow in places - prefer compact cars for lakeside driving.
- Walking - Bellagio’s centre is compact and best explored on foot: narrow lanes, viewpoints and lakeside promenades are pedestrian-friendly. Expect cobbled streets and steps - comfortable shoes recommended.
