Historical Site Ancient fortified city center with markets and palaces
Old city centred on Jemaa el-Fna with souks, Koutoubia Mosque, palaces and riads. Visitors browse spice and craft stalls, tour Bahia Palace and watch market life from rooftop cafés at dusk.
The Medina of Marrakesh is the historic walled core of Marrakesh in central Morocco, founded in the 11th century and developed under successive dynasties into a major political, religious and commercial centre. It remains one of Morocco’s most visited and best-known historic urban quarters.
The medina is centred on the large public square Jemaa el-Fna, surrounded by traditional souks, artisan quarters and key monuments such as the 12th century Koutoubia Mosque. The area preserves a dense urban fabric of alleys, markets and courtyards, with palaces and funerary monuments set within the historic core.
Marrakesh’s medina expanded and was reshaped across the Almoravid, Almohad, Saadian and later periods, producing major monuments such as monumental minarets, royal palaces and decorated funerary complexes. Its souks remain organised by craft and commodity and continue to function as an active commercial system.
The medina sits at the heart of Marrakesh in the Marrakesh-Safi region, near the foothills of the High Atlas mountains and accessible from the modern city surrounding the old walls.
- Best time to experience the square: Evening is the liveliest time for Jemaa el-Fna when food stalls and performers concentrate in the square; daytime visits are better for monuments and museums.
- Navigation tip: The medina is pedestrianised with very narrow streets; guided routes help to navigate souks and find specific craft quarters.
