How to Get to Martil
Martil is best reached by road from nearby Tetouan or Tangier; the two nearest airports are Tangier Ibn Battouta (TNG) and Tetouan-Sania Ramel (TTU). There is no direct rail service to Martil, so most arrivals by air or train connect onward by bus or taxi via Tetouan or Tangier.
Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG): Tangier’s international airport is the main air gateway for Martil. From TNG you can take the airport shuttle (navette) into Tangier city centre (approx. 30-40 MAD, ~25-35 minutes) and then switch to a grand taxi or intercity bus to Martil (see Train & Bus card). A direct private taxi from the airport to Martil is also possible (approx. 300-400 MAD, ~40-60 minutes) depending on traffic.
Tetouan-Sania Ramel Airport (TTU): This smaller airport serves Tetouan and nearby towns and is closer to Martil. A taxi from Tetouan-Sania Ramel to Martil typically costs around 80-120 MAD and takes about 20-30 minutes. Alternatively, take a petit taxi or shared taxi into Tetouan centre (lower fare) and change to a short local ride to Martil.
Train: There is no rail line directly to Martil; the nearest major station is Gare de Tanger-Ville (ONCF). Long-distance trains (including the Al Boraq high-speed services) connect Tangier with Rabat, Kenitra and Casablanca - from Tangier you must continue to Martil by bus or taxi. Expect the rail leg to Tangier to take between about 1-2.5 hours depending on destination and service; ticket prices on ONCF/Al Boraq vary widely by route and class.
Bus: Intercity bus companies such as CTM and local carriers run regular services between Tangier and Tetouan; fares are typically in the range of 30-60 MAD and the journey takes about 1-1.5 hours. From Tetouan there are frequent petit taxis, local buses and shared (grand) taxis to Martil - short transfers from Tetouan to Martil cost roughly 5-20 MAD and take about 10-25 minutes.
How to Get Around Martil
Martil is easiest to navigate by a mixture of short taxi hops and walking - for most visitors the fastest approach is to arrive via Tangier or Tetouan and finish the trip by grand/petit taxi. Intercity buses are reliable and cheaper for budget travellers, while renting a car suits those who want to explore the surrounding coast and mountains.
- Intercity bus (CTM & local carriers) (30-60 MAD) - CTM and several local bus operators link Tangier, Tetouan and other northern cities; buses are comfortable, air-conditioned and run on a regular schedule. Use these services to reach Tetouan and then change to a local taxi or bus for the short hop to Martil. Book CTM tickets at the station or online for longer routes and expect luggage handling at larger stops.
- Grand taxis (shared) (10-80 MAD) - Shared grand taxis (typically Mercedes sedans) are the most common intercity/shared option in northern Morocco and are inexpensive for short hops between Tangier, Tetouan and Martil. They leave from taxi ranks when full and are a fast, practical way to travel if you don't have luggage to spare. Expect to negotiate or confirm the price before departing; they can be crowded but are usually quicker than local buses.
- Petit taxis (local) (5-30 MAD) - Petit taxis operate within Tetouan and Martil and are ideal for short inner-city trips, airport transfers into town from Tetouan-Sania Ramel, or first/last-mile connections from bus stops. Always ask the driver to use the meter where available or agree a fare in advance; fares are low but rise at night. Note that petit taxis typically take up to three passengers within city limits.
- Rental car (350-700 MAD/day (varies widely)) - Renting a car gives the most flexibility for exploring the Rif coast and reaching quieter beaches near Martil. Roads in the area are generally in good condition, but watch for narrow sections and local driving styles. Parking in Martil is usually straightforward outside peak summer weekends; factor in fuel costs and insurance when comparing to taxis.
- Train (via Tangier) (Varies by route) - Although there is no railway to Martil itself, you can travel by train to Tangier (Gare de Tanger-Ville) on ONCF services - including Al Boraq high-speed trains on major routes - and continue by bus or taxi to Martil. Trains are comfortable and quick for longer distances; always check ONCF schedules and book high-speed services in advance for the best fares and seats.
- Walking - Martil is compact and very walkable along the seafront promenade and through the town centre; walking is the best way to enjoy beaches, cafés and markets at a relaxed pace. Use walking for short trips inside town - it's often faster and more pleasant than short taxi rides during busy periods.
