How to Get to Chefchaouen#
Chefchaouen is best reached by road from Tangier or Fès; there is no railway to the town. Regular CTM and private buses, plus shared taxis, provide the usual public transport connections.
Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport (TNG): Tangier is the nearest major airport with frequent flights from Spain and Europe. Buses and shared taxis to Chefchaouen take about 2-3 hours; expect bus fares of roughly MAD 40-80 and petit‑taxi or shared‑taxi (grand taxi) options at similar or slightly higher cost depending on negotiation.
Fès-Saïs Airport (FEZ): Fes is another convenient air gateway; road transfers or buses to Chefchaouen take roughly 3-4 hours. Bus fares from Fès are usually in the MAD 60-120 range depending on operator and service level.
Train: There is no direct rail service to Chefchaouen; nearby railheads are Tangier and Fès.
Bus: CTM and several private operators run regular buses to Chefchaouen from Tangier, Tetouan and Fès. Travel times are typically 2-4 hours: Tangier→Chefchaouen ~2-2.5 hours (MAD 40-70), Tetouan→Chefchaouen ~1.5-2 hours, Fès→Chefchaouen ~3-4 hours (MAD 70-120). Grand taxis also operate on these routes and can be faster but slightly more expensive.
How to Get Around Chefchaouen#
There is no train to Chefchaouen; buses and shared grand taxis from Tangier, Tetouan and Fès are the standard public routes. Once there, the medina is a walker’s town-use taxis only for longer or uphill journeys.
- CTM / private intercity bus (MAD 40-120) - CTM and regional coach operators provide scheduled services to Chefchaouen from Tangier, Tetouan and Fès. Buses are comfortable and cheap, with departures several times a day on main routes-book ahead in high season.
- Grand taxi (shared taxi) (MAD 60-150) - Shared grand taxis (usually 6‑seaters) are a faster, slightly pricier option for intercity travel to Chefchaouen. They leave when full and are useful for flexible schedules; agree the destination and fare in advance for fixed‑price trips.
- Private transfer / car rental (MAD 300-800/day) - Hiring a car or private driver gives the most flexibility, especially if you want to stop in the Rif countryside. Roads are generally good but some mountain roads are narrow-drive cautiously in wet weather.
- Local taxis (MAD 5-40) - Within Chefchaouen small taxis and walking are the main ways to move around the medina and nearby viewpoints. Small taxis are inexpensive for short hops; negotiate or check meter rules where applicable.
- Walking - Chefchaouen’s medina is compact and best experienced on foot-narrow cobbled streets and stairways are not suitable for vehicles. Comfortable shoes are essential and expect lots of uphill sections to viewpoints.
