Marojejy National Park is a protected area in northeastern Madagascar that preserves rugged primary rainforest on the Marojejy massif, noted for high biodiversity and rare endemic species. The park’s steep ridges and valleys support distinct elevational bands of flora and fauna.

Dense primary forest, canopy species and rare lemurs such as the silky sifaka, along with numerous reptiles, amphibians and endemic plants. Most visits involve multi-day treks and overnight camping to reach higher-elevation viewpoints and to increase chances of wildlife sightings.

The park was established to protect the massif’s exceptional biodiversity and remains an important conservation area within Madagascar’s protected-area network.

Marojejy is located in the northeast of Madagascar, and access is typically via regional towns followed by local roads and trailheads leading into the park.

  • Notable wildlife: The park is known for the critically endangered silky sifaka and other highly localized endemic species; sightings require guided treks and patience.
  • Trail difficulty: Terrain is rugged and trails can be steep and challenging; many visitors camp overnight at designated camps to reach higher ridgelines.

What to See #

  • Marojejy massif and ridges: Steep ridgelines, deep valleys and high-elevation camps used for multi-day treks that showcase primary rainforest on the massif.
  • Lowland rainforest zones: Lower-elevation rainforest zones that are accessible from trailheads and host diverse reptiles, amphibians and bird species.

How to Get to Marojejy National Park #

Marojejy National Park is accessed from the Sava region’s coastal towns - visitors commonly reach the area via Sambava (by road or by domestic flight from Antananarivo) and then continue by 4x4 to the park’s entrance villages. From the park villages you proceed on foot with a guide to the interior camps and trails.

Tips for Visiting Marojejy National Park #

  • Plan Marojejy visits for the dry season (May-October) when trails and camps are most accessible; heavy rains make the steep trails slippery and lengthen travel times considerably.
  • Book park permits and an experienced guide in advance through the regional park office and be prepared for multi-day treks - many day visitors miss the higher-elevation cloud forest and viewpoints that require overnight stays.
  • Start hikes early each day to maximize wildlife sightings (including rare lemurs) and to avoid the afternoon rain and the small but concentrated groups that arrive later on the main trails.
