Mali’s main air gateway is Modibo Keita International Airport (BKO) in Bamako, the national capital and the country’s main entry point for travel. It is one of Mali’s major airports handling high volumes of traffic, and it fits Bamako’s role as a transport hub for reaching the Bamako & South region.
Beyond Bamako, Gao International Airport (GAQ) is Mali’s other international airport, serving Gao in the north and providing air access to the Timbuktu & the North area. Domestic flights connect additional regional centers: Mopti Airport (MZI) links to Mopti, a busy river port and gateway to river excursions in the inland delta around Djenné; Tombouktou Airport (TOM) serves Timbuktu; and Kayes Dag Dag Airport (KYS) provides access to Kayes in western Mali. Flying can be part of longer itineraries that also use Mali’s overland transport, with the classic route running from Bamako to the inland delta around Mopti and Djenné and on toward the Bandiagara Escarpment.
