Skopje & the Vardar Valley
May brings full spring warmth and long daylight hours that make the Old Bazaar and Kale Fortress lively; expect highs in the low to mid-20s°C. Occasional thunderstorms begin to show up in the afternoons, more likely once the air mass over the country grows unstable. Crowds remain moderate and it’s a strong month for cycling, vineyard visits, and outdoor terraces - bring sun protection and a thin rain shell for sudden showers.
Lake Ohrid & Southwestern Lakeside (Ohrid, Struga, Prespa)
By May the lakeshore comes alive: gardens and terraced cafés bloom in Ohrid, and Struga’s riverfront looks neat for leisurely riverside walks. Daytime temperatures are warm and pleasant, with cooler evenings; ferry and boat services increase and the first swimmers may test the clear water. Expect moderate crowds later in the month, so reserve accommodation if you want a room near the waterfront.
Pelagonia Basin & Bitola (including Pelister National Park)
May in Pelagonia is green and fragrant: the landscape is in full bloom and Pelister’s lower meadows host grazing livestock and blooming orchids in some years. Temperatures rise into the high teens or low 20s°C, comfortable for long walks through Bitola’s avenues and the Baba Mountain foothills. Local agricultural life is busy, and spring festivals begin to return; late frosts are rare but a light jacket is still handy at dawn.
Mavrovo, Šar Mountains & Western Highlands
May usually brings a spectacular green-up: wildflowers carpet meadows around Galičica’s neighbor ranges and the high pastures above Mavrovo fill with grazing animals. Snow persists only on the highest peaks, and lower mountain hikes become reliable. This is one of the best months for birdwatching and visiting remote shepherd cottages - expect variable mountain weather and carry layered clothing.
Eastern & Southeastern Lowlands (Štip, Kočani, Strumica, Gevgelija)
May ushers in warm, stable weather and blossoming orchards; the landscape around Strumica is fragrant and lively with agricultural fairs beginning. Daytime highs are comfortable, making cycling and walks around rural heritage sites enjoyable. Expect more traffic as Macedonians travel and make weekend trips - book accommodation if you want to stay near regional festivals.
