Skopje & the Vardar Valley

August continues the peak-heat pattern; mornings are pleasant but midday and afternoon are often scorchers in the Vardar plain, especially around Gevgelija and the low-lying vineyards. Urban life slows on the hottest days; evenings come alive again as people dine outdoors. If visiting then, book air-conditioned lodging, schedule cultural visits for cooler hours, and expect busy weekend traffic to lakes and the south.

Lake Ohrid & Southwestern Lakeside (Ohrid, Struga, Prespa)

August keeps the tourist tempo high and warm nights make lakeside dining popular; expect long queues at popular swimming spots and museums. Water-based activities dominate - kayaking, boat trips to Bay of Saint Naum and diving off small piers - while the sunlight is excellent for panoramas of the lake and mountains. If you prefer solitude, plan hikes above 1,200 m where temperatures are noticeably cooler.

Pelagonia Basin & Bitola (including Pelister National Park)

August continues hot weather with occasional intense heat spells; daytime highs often sit in the high 20s to low 30s°C across the plain. Mountain areas remain pleasant and are the best escape for anyone wanting lower temps and fewer insects. Festivals and outdoor events in Bitola still take place, but plan strenuous activities for morning and late afternoon and expect busier roads to mountain trailheads.

Mavrovo, Šar Mountains & Western Highlands

August keeps the high country comfortable for hiking, with daytime temperatures often 10-20°C cooler than the lowlands; mountain huts and trails receive most visitors on fine days. Thunderstorms are still a possibility in the afternoons; they can make ridgelines dangerous so avoid exposed peaks during cell development. Nights are chilly - a warm sleeping bag is essential if camping.

Eastern & Southeastern Lowlands (Štip, Kočani, Strumica, Gevgelija)

August continues the warm, dry pattern with many days of strong sun - evenings bring some relief but temperatures stay high, especially inland. Regional festivals and open-air events run late into the night, and vineyards and orchards bustle with harvesting in later weeks. Plan travel early or late in the day to avoid the worst heat, and keep flexible transport plans in case of storm disruptions.
