Skopje & the Vardar Valley

By June the Vardar corridor is warm and increasingly dry, with temperatures often pushing into the high 20s°C and, on still days, higher in sheltered pockets. River activities on the Vardar and Matka boat trips start running regularly; the intense heat of late summer isn’t here yet, but brief summer storms are possible. This month is great for festivals and early summer dining outdoors, though pack a hat and reusable water bottle.

Lake Ohrid & Southwestern Lakeside (Ohrid, Struga, Prespa)

June marks the beginning of busy season: sunshine is reliable, water temperatures are slowly rising, and the UNESCO-listed old town welcomes steady visitors. Late afternoons sometimes see short summer storms, but most days are ideal for boat trips to nearby islands and swimming at sandy coves around Sveti Naum. Pack swimwear and sun protection, and book popular restaurants in advance on warm evenings.

Pelagonia Basin & Bitola (including Pelister National Park)

June warms quickly and long daylight favors exploring ruins like Heraclea Lyncestis and walking Pelister’s lower ridges in cool mornings. By midmonth temperatures in Prilep and Bitola can reach the mid to high 20s°C, making mountain outings early to avoid heat. Thunderstorms become more likely in the afternoons as the season progresses, which can affect higher-elevation trails.

Mavrovo, Šar Mountains & Western Highlands

June offers long, cool days at altitude and excellent conditions for trekking, biking and rafting on rivers flowing from the Šar massif. Mosquitoes can appear around lowland lakes and wetlands, but higher trails are mostly insect-free and pleasantly cool. Pack sun protection for exposed ridgelines and a light jacket for evening temperatures which drop noticeably after sunset.

Eastern & Southeastern Lowlands (Štip, Kočani, Strumica, Gevgelija)

June heats up fast across the plains, with temperatures frequently rising into the high 20s°C and Gevgelija becoming noticeably hotter. Afternoon thunderstorms may develop on unstable days, sometimes causing short but heavy downpours and local flooding on smaller roads. If you’re planning outdoor activities, aim for morning starts and carry sun protection and water.
