The stone-faced Lubyanka Building on the square housed the headquarters of the Soviet security apparatus in the twentieth century and contained detention facilities that became historically notable. The building remains a conspicuous element of the square’s architecture and urban identity.
Over the twentieth century the square and building were focal points for security administration in Moscow and have featured in public memory and historical accounts of the Soviet period. The area today is part of Moscow’s dense central district with administrative and commercial functions.
The square lies in central Moscow north of the Kremlin and within the city’s Garden Ring area.
