Lovran City
Coastal Croatian town on the Kvarner Bay
Lovran’s stone lanes and Villa Angiolina park sit on the Opatija Riviera; tourists linger for coastal walks on the Lungomare, seafood restaurants under chestnut trees, and ferries to nearby islands.
Why Visit Lovran?#
Perched on the Kvarner coast, Lovran attracts travelers looking for a refined seaside escape where historic charm meets coastal flavors. Narrow cobbled streets in the old town and grand villas along the Lungomare set a leisurely scene, while fresh Istrian seafood and the chestnut treats of the annual Maruni festival give the town distinct local flavor. Hiking on nearby Učka offers sweeping coastal views. Close enough to Opatija for day trips, it still feels intimate.

How to Get to Lovran#
Lovran on the Kvarner coast is easiest reached via Rijeka (by air through Rijeka Airport) or by rail/bus to nearby Matulji/Rijeka. From Rijeka/Matulji short regional buses or taxis connect Lovran and the Opatija Riviera.
Rijeka Airport (RJK): Rijeka Airport is the closest airport for Lovran (on the island of Krk). From Rijeka Airport there are scheduled shuttle buses to Rijeka city (approx. 30-40 min) and taxis; expect shuttle fares around 30-50 HRK (≈4-7 EUR) and taxi rides to Lovran around 200-350 HRK (≈27-47 EUR), travel time ~40-60 min depending on connection.
Pula (PUY) / Zagreb (ZAG): Pula and Zagreb airports are further but offer more flight options. From Pula it is a 1.5-2 hour drive to Lovran (buses available; fares typically €10-20). From Zagreb airport, trains or buses to Rijeka take about 3.5-4.5 hours and cost roughly €15-30; from Rijeka you then take a short bus or taxi to Lovran.
Train: The nearest main rail hub is Matulji (Matulji railway station) / Rijeka railway station on Croatia’s coastal lines. Regional trains connect Rijeka with Matulji; Matulji is the closest stop for the Opatija/Lovran area. Train fares on short regional legs are usually in the 10-30 HRK range (≈1.5-4 EUR); travel from Rijeka/Matulji to the Lovran area is a short bus/taxi ride (10-20 minutes).
Bus: Regional buses run frequently between Rijeka, Opatija and Lovran (operators include local carriers such as Autotrans/Liburnija). Expect fares around 12-30 HRK (≈1.5-4 EUR) for the Rijeka-Lovran/Parking area and journey times of 15-25 minutes from Rijeka.
How to Get Around Lovran#
Lovran is best navigated on foot for the town itself, with regional buses and short taxi rides to connect to Rijeka/Matulji. Renting a car gives the most flexibility for exploring the coastal and inland areas, while ferries are useful for day trips to islands.
- Car / Rental (€30-60/day (rental)) - Driving is convenient for exploring the Kvarner coastline and nearby Istria; car rentals are available in Rijeka and at larger airports. Roads are well maintained but can be narrow along the coast; expect seasonal traffic in summer. Parking in Lovran is limited near the seafront, so plan accordingly.
- Local bus (Opatija-Lovran) (12-30 HRK) - Local buses link Lovran with Opatija and Rijeka frequently; they are the most practical public-transport option. Timetables are denser in summer; keep small change or a local ticket bought at kiosks. Buses drop you close to the seafront and main promenades.
- Regional train (to Matulji / Rijeka) (10-30 HRK) - Regional trains serve Rijeka and Matulji; Matulji is the nearest rail access for Lovran. Trains are useful for longer coastal hops (e.g., Rijeka-Pula) but you will typically transfer to a bus or taxi for the last few kilometres into Lovran.
- Taxi / Rideshare (200-350 HRK) - Taxis are convenient for door-to-door travel (airport transfers, luggage-heavy trips) but are considerably more expensive than buses. Agree a price or ensure the meter is used for airport and cross-town fares. Rideshare availability is limited compared with big cities.
- Ferry (from Rijeka or nearby ports) (Varies by route (small island hops ≈€3-15)) - Ferries and catamarans depart Rijeka to nearby islands-useful if combining Lovran with island trips. Ferries are run by Jadrolinija and other operators; schedules are seasonal. Ferries are not needed to reach Lovran itself but are handy for day trips.
- Walking - Lovran is compact and walkable: the seafront promenade and old town are best explored on foot. Expect some steep streets leading up from the lungomare promenade.
