Gorski Kotar Mountains

Gorski Kotar is a mountainous, forested region in western Croatia within Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, known locally for its dense woods and mountain landscapes. The area contains protected parks and traditional rural settlements.

Trail networks, forest routes and mountain roads link small towns and mountain huts; visitors come for hiking, wildlife watching and winter sports on local slopes. The terrain includes karst features, alpine meadows and mixed broadleaf-conifer forests.

Historically the region developed around forestry, pastoralism and small-scale agriculture; parts of it have been protected as national and nature parks to conserve habitat and biodiversity. Modern tourism focuses on outdoor recreation and rural cultural heritage.

Gorski Kotar lies between Croatia’s Adriatic coast and the inland plains, forming a natural highland between Rijeka on the coast and continental Croatia. Towns and road links provide access from the coast and from inland cities.

Gorski Kotar is a mountainous region between Rijeka and Karlovac in western Croatia and is best reached by road. The A6 motorway (Zagreb-Rijeka) provides the main motor-vehicle access; take exits toward Delnice or Ravna Gora to enter the Gorski Kotar area.

Rijeka is the nearest major city on the Adriatic coast - driving from Rijeka into central parts of Gorski Kotar typically takes around 30-60 minutes depending on the destination within the region. Local state roads connect villages and hiking trailheads; public buses link Rijeka with larger towns such as Delnice.

• Use Delnice or Fužine as practical bases for exploring Gorski Kotar - both towns provide the nearest services and marked trailheads into the massif.
• Travel in the shoulder seasons (late spring to early autumn) to catch the region when mountain roads and forest tracks are open and the lakes and waterfalls are at their most accessible.
• Explore lesser-known villages such as Mrkopalj and the smaller forest roads rather than only the main viewpoints-many visitors miss the area's network of mountain lodges, rural museums and quiet forest trails.
