How to Get to Lichinga
Lichinga is served by a small regional airport (Lichinga Airport, VXC) with limited scheduled flights; many visitors arrive via Nampula and continue overland. Overland buses and shared minibuses are the most reliable way to connect Lichinga with other Mozambican cities and regional centres.
Lichinga Airport (VXC): Lichinga Airport is the town’s small regional airport, located a short drive from the centre. From the airport the usual options are a local taxi or pre-arranged hotel transfer; the drive into town typically takes about 15-25 minutes by road. Taxis are the most reliable option outside scheduled flights; there is no regular airport shuttle.
Nampula Airport (APL): Nampula is the nearest larger airport with more frequent regional connections. If you cannot find a direct flight to Lichinga you can fly into Nampula and continue overland; road transfers and intercity buses between Nampula and Lichinga generally take around 7-9 hours depending on road conditions. Private transfers and shared buses are the common choices for the onward journey.
Train: There is no direct passenger rail service into Lichinga. Mozambique’s main passenger lines (the Nacala corridor around Nampula/Cuamba) do not reach Lichinga, so rail travel requires changing to road transport at the nearest rail-served towns.
Bus: Road transport is the primary way to reach Lichinga by land. Intercity buses and shared minibuses (chapas) run routes linking Lichinga with Nampula, Cuamba and other regional centres; journey times vary but expect roughly 7-10 hours from Nampula by regular coach depending on stops and road condition. Within the region, shared minibuses and scheduled coach services are the common and economical option for longer trips.
How to Get Around Lichinga
Lichinga is best navigated on foot for short trips within the compact centre and by moto-taxi or taxi for quick local journeys. For longer travel - to Nampula or other provinces - shared minibuses and long-distance coaches are the usual, economical choice; rent a 4x4 if you plan to explore rural areas where roads are rough.
- Taxi (300-800 MZN (approx. US$5-15, rough estimate)) - Taxis are the most comfortable way to get between the airport, bus station and around town. They are informal and fares are typically negotiated in meticais-confirm the price before setting off. Taxis are useful for luggage and early/late travel when moto-taxis are less available.
- Moto-taxi (50-200 MZN (approx. US$1-4, rough estimate)) - Motorcycle taxis are common for short hops inside Lichinga and for reaching nearby neighbourhoods quickly. They are inexpensive and can weave through traffic, but helmets and caution are advisable-carry small notes for payment. Use moto-taxis for short trips when you travel light.
- Shared minibuses (chapas) (50-300 MZN (short local to regional, rough estimate)) - Shared minibuses (locally called chapas) form the backbone of local and regional public transport. They run set routes but depart only when full; expect frequent stops and a very local experience. Chapas are the cheapest way to travel but can be crowded and have irregular schedules.
- Long-distance coach (500-1,500 MZN (rough estimate, depending on operator and distance)) - Scheduled long-distance coaches connect Lichinga with Nampula and other provincial centres. Coaches are slower than private transfers but more comfortable than chapas for long legs; expect variable departure times and occasional delays due to road conditions. Book in advance where possible for weekend or holiday travel.
- Car hire / 4x4 (US$60-120 per day (approx., depending on vehicle and season)) - Hiring a car (ideally a 4x4) gives the greatest flexibility for exploring Niassa Province and nearby reserves. Roads outside the town can be rough, especially in the rains, so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. Arrange hire through a reputable operator and confirm fuel and insurance arrangements beforehand.
- Walking - Lichinga's town centre is compact and pedestrian-friendly; many shops, markets and restaurants are within a short walking distance of the main streets. Walking is the best way to get a feel for the town, but use caution after dark and keep valuables discreet.
