Metangula is a lakeside town on Lake Niassa (Lake Malawi) reached mainly by road from Lichinga or by boat on the lake. Expect multi-hour overland journeys on variable roads; plan for limited local services.

By Air

Lichinga Airport: Lichinga (the provincial capital) is the nearest airport with scheduled services for Niassa Province. From Lichinga you can continue to Metangula by road; the journey may take several hours depending on condition of roads.

Nampula (regional gateway): Some international itineraries route through Nampula and then travel overland or via regional connections into Niassa Province.

By Train & Bus

Train: Mozambique’s rail network does not provide direct passenger service to Metangula.

Bus / chapa / minibus: Road transport (chapas and minibuses) and private 4x4s are the normal way to reach Metangula from Lichinga and other towns. Travel times can be long on dirt roads; check seasonal road conditions.
