How to Get to Leysin#
Leysin is best reached by train: take an SBB train to Aigle (from Geneva or Lausanne) and change to the Aigle-Leysin mountain railway for the climb into the resort. Geneva Airport is the most convenient international gateway.
Geneva Airport (GVA): Geneva is the closest major international airport for Leysin. From Geneva Airport take a direct train to Aigle (journey time ~1h10-1h30 depending on connection); fare is typically CHF 25-40 one way. In Aigle change to the Aigle-Leysin metre‑gauge mountain railway (operated by Transports Publics du Chablais, TPC) for the scenic climb to Leysin (about 20-30 minutes); Aigle → Leysin fares are generally CHF 6-8.
Zurich Airport (ZRH): Zurich is further away and travel time to Leysin is significantly longer (around 2.5-3.5 hours by rail with one or two changes), so Geneva is usually the preferred airport for Leysin visitors.
Train: Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) run frequent services to Aigle from Geneva or Lausanne; transfer at Aigle to the TPC Aigle-Leysin line. Total rail + mountain‑rail time Geneva → Leysin is typically 1.5-2 hours.
Bus: Within Leysin and surrounding areas local buses serve short routes and ski shuttle services operate in winter. The train + mountain railway is the most reliable and scenic option for reaching the resort from the lowlands.
How to Get Around Leysin#
Train to Aigle followed by the Aigle-Leysin mountain railway is the recommended and most reliable route into Leysin. Once in the resort, walking and local shuttles handle short journeys; taxis and hire cars are useful for flexibility.
- SBB (Geneva/Lausanne → Aigle) (CHF 25-40 (Geneva → Aigle)) - SBB regional and intercity trains connect Geneva and Lausanne with Aigle regularly. Trains are comfortable and punctual; buy tickets at the station or via the SBB app. From Aigle you change to the Aigle-Leysin mountain railway.
- Aigle-Leysin (TPC) mountain railway (CHF 6-8) - The metre‑gauge mountain railway from Aigle to Leysin is frequent and scenic, taking about 20-30 minutes. It’s the standard link from the mainline network into the resort; buy combined tickets or use SwissPass options where valid.
- Local buses / ski shuttles (CHF 2-5) - Local buses and seasonal ski shuttles serve Leysin and nearby hamlets; schedules expand in winter. Useful for short transfers within the valley when the mountain railway or walking is less convenient.
- Taxi / Car (Taxi: CHF 30-80; Car hire: variable) - Taxis and hire cars give door‑to‑door flexibility, especially for heavy luggage or late arrivals. Roads up to Leysin are well maintained but parking in peak season can be limited; check hotel parking arrangements.
