Lavaux is a steep, terraced vineyard landscape on the northern shore of Lake Geneva in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, recognized for its long-standing wine-producing tradition. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007 for its coherent cultural landscape.

The area is known for its continuous rows of stone-built terraces and small vineyard plots that run along the lakeshore and up the slopes, offering expansive views over the lake and the Alps. Wine tasting at local domaines and walking the marked Lavaux vineyard trail are the main activities for visitors.

Vine cultivation in Lavaux dates back many centuries and was shaped by local farmers and monastic orders who constructed the terraces. Over time the landscape has been maintained and adapted by local winegrowers, preserving the traditional parceling and dry-stone walls.

Lavaux sits between the cities of Lausanne and Montreux on Lake Geneva, running along the lakeshore and rising into vineyard-covered slopes above lakeside villages. The nearest major city is Lausanne, and the landscape is a mix of cultivated terraces, villages, and lakeshore promenades.

The Lavaux vineyard terraces stretch along the north shore of Lake Geneva between Lausanne and Montreux. By car the terraces are reached from Lausanne or Vevey via the A9/route along the lakeshore; parking and local paths connect the villages and viewpoints (walking times from stations to viewpoints vary from a few minutes to about 20 minutes).

• Walk a section of the official Lavaux UNESCO trail (for example Chexbres to Rivaz or Saint‑Saphorin) in the early morning or late afternoon to get softer light over the terraces and to avoid midday tour‑group traffic.
• Use the regional train to hop on and off at small stations (Chexbres‑Ville, Rivaz, Saint‑Saphorin) so you can tailor a short walk between villages rather than attempting the whole stretch at once.
• Make time for the Belvédère/Chexbres viewpoint for the classic panorama over the vineyards and lake-many visitors pass through the towns without stopping at that particular lookout.
