Aiguille Verte Mountain

Aiguille Verte is a prominent peak in the Mont Blanc massif of the French Alps, known for steep, technical climbing routes. It reaches over 4,100 metres and is a significant objective for alpine climbers.

The mountain’s faces and ridgelines present serious snow, ice and rock challenges and have long classical routes popular with experienced mountaineers. It is one of several high ‘aiguille’ peaks in the massif that define the alpine skyline.

First ascents and notable climbs on the peak date to the golden age of alpinism in the 19th century, and it remains an important and respected mountain in European mountaineering.

The Aiguille Verte lies near Chamonix in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France, within the Mont Blanc massif close to other major alpine peaks.

• Elevation: At an elevation of 4,122 metres it is a high Alpine peak in the Mont Blanc massif and requires technical mountaineering on most routes.
• Climbing difficulty: The mountain is known for steep faces and long technical routes that attract experienced alpinists rather than casual hikers.

Aiguille Verte is in the Mont Blanc massif above the Chamonix valley. The usual approach is via Chamonix (drive or transfer from Geneva); Geneva to Chamonix is about 100 km on the A40/N205. From Chamonix you continue up the valley to Argentière and onward on foot or by local lifts/trails into the high mountain approach - the final routes on Aiguille Verte require glacier travel and technical alpine climbing.

• Plan climbs in the core summer season (roughly July-September) when crevasse and serac conditions are generally more stable and daylight is long.
• Aiguille Verte is a technical, high‑alpine objective that involves steep ice, mixed climbing and glacier travel - hire an IFMGA/UIAGM mountain guide and make sure you have recent alpine experience.
• Approaches are usually made from the Chamonix/Argentière side; move your start time very early in the morning and allow extra days for weather delays and acclimatisation.
