Lake Chamo

Lake Chamo is a freshwater rift-valley lake in southern Ethiopia, located immediately south of the town of Arba Minch and contiguous with Lake Abaya via a narrow channel. It is a significant local centre for wildlife viewing, especially crocodiles and hippopotamuses.

The lake’s margins and islands support abundant birdlife and populations of Nile crocodile and hippopotamus, which are commonly seen from boats launched near Arba Minch. Boat safaris along the lake are a regular activity for visitors seeking wildlife sightings and birdwatching.

The lake occupies part of the East African Rift zone and has been an important subsistence and ecological resource for local communities. The adjoining Nechisar protected area helps conserve the shoreline habitats and wildlife.

Geographically Lake Chamo lies in the Rift lowlands of southern Ethiopia, immediately adjacent to the town of Arba Minch and the Nechisar plain.

• Nechisar National Park: Nechisar National Park borders parts of the lake and the narrow isthmus between Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo, and is the main area for boat safaris and wildlife viewing.
