Nechisar National Park National Park

Nechisar National Park is a protected area in southern Ethiopia that conserves a mosaic of lakeshore, grassland and woodland habitats situated between two rift-valley lakes. It is noted for its birdlife and for wildlife typical of the region’s lowland plains.

Key features are lakeshore viewing for waterbirds, wetland zones and open grassland where larger mammals and water-dependent species can be seen. Short wildlife excursions and boat trips on the lakeshore are common visitor activities, with seasonal variations in animal concentrations.

The area has long been recognised for its biodiversity and was set aside to conserve the lake-shore ecosystems and associated wildlife. Management has focused on balancing local use, pastoral activity and conservation of wetlands and shoreline habitats.

The park occupies lowland country in southern Ethiopia near the town of Arba Minch, lying on the isthmus between Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo within the Rift Valley landscape.

Mixed dirt roads and seasonal conditions mean a high‑clearance vehicle is commonly recommended for in‑park travel; guided tours are a convenient option.

• Use Arba Minch as your base-most park trips and boat safaris on Lake Chamo start there, and local operators and park rangers arrange entrances and guided wildlife tours.
• Visit early morning for the best wildlife viewing (hippos and birdlife) and to avoid mid-day heat and the bulk of tour-boat traffic on Lake Chamo.
• Arrange transport with a 4x4 or guide during the rainy season-roads into parts of Nechisar can become difficult, and local guides know the park tracks and entrance procedures.
